Roles

A role is a decision the server should not have to remember.

What it does

Six things a server does with roles, and every one of them is something a moderator would otherwise do by hand, forget, or do inconsistently.

Roles on arrival, roles members take themselves, roles that expire, roles that survive a departure, a role for wearing your tag, and groups you belong to one of.

What you can do

  • Automatic roles on arrival: give or take, people or bots, with a delay
  • Self-service roles, taken with /roleme, from a list the server controls
  • Temporary roles that expire on their own — or come back after a wait
  • Persistent roles, kept when a member leaves and restored when they return
  • A role for the members wearing your server tag, and factions you belong to one of

How to set it up

3 steps · about 3 minutes

  1. 1

    Start with one automatic role

Give every arrival a Member role. It is the one rule almost every server wants, and it takes one row.

  2. 2

Add a delay before you need one

Ten minutes is enough that a throwaway account posting a link is gone before the role lands. It costs your real members nothing.

  3. 3

    Make your mute persistent

Leaving and rejoining is the oldest way to shed a mute. One persistent role closes it, and it is the single most useful row on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my automatic role stop appearing?

Almost always the role sits above the bot in the list, or Discord manages it — a bot role, a subscription role. A bot can only hand out roles below its own, so drag BILBI above it.

What happens to a temporary role if the bot is offline when it expires?

It is removed on the next sweep after the bot comes back. Deadlines live in the database, not in memory, so nothing is lost to a restart — a role may simply outstay its welcome by a few minutes.
