Reminders
Two things the bot notices for you: a word you follow, and the moment your listing may be bumped again.
What it does
A busy server is unreadable, so people stop reading it — and then miss the one message that was about them. Followed words fix that without asking anybody to watch a channel: a member picks their own words, and is told in private when one is said.
The bump reminder is the other half. A listing only ranks a server that bumps, it may be bumped every two hours, and nobody remembers. The bot counts from the last bump it saw and says when the next one is due.
Neither costs a member anything, and both work while nobody is looking. That is the whole reason a bot gets kept for months.
What you can do
- `/highlight add`, `remove` and `list`, each member for themselves
- Whole words only: following `art` does not mean being told about `start`
- Never about your own message, and never from a channel you cannot read
- A quiet period after each notice, so one conversation is one notification
- The bump counted automatically, in whatever language the listing answers in
- The reminder in the channel of your choice, with an opt-in role if you have one

Switch the followed words on
Five words per member is plenty. Then tell your members `/highlight add` exists — nobody discovers a command they were not told about.

Try it with a second account
Follow a word, have the other account say it in a channel you can read, and check the private message arrives with a link back to it.

Switch the bump reminder on
Leave the channel empty and it answers where the bump happened. Choose a role people opt into rather than pinging everybody every two hours.

Bump once, and wait
The bot only counts from a bump it has seen. Run yours, and the reminder arrives two hours later in the room you chose.
Frequently asked questions
Can somebody follow a word to spy on a private channel?
No. Every notice is checked against that member's own permissions at the moment the message is sent: a channel they cannot read never produces one.
Where is the list of words members follow?
Nowhere an administrator can read it, and that is deliberate. The words somebody follows say what they care about and who they are avoiding.
