Invitations

Who brought whom, and who stayed.

What it does

A server grows through the people already in it, and nothing says which of them did the bringing. The question comes up the day you want to thank somebody, and there is no answer.

Discord does not say either: it publishes a list of invitations with a use counter on each. The module holds those counters and compares them the moment somebody arrives.

So the answer is a deduction — and when it cannot be made, this module says so rather than crediting the wrong person.

What you can do

  • Who invited each arrival, worked out as they arrive
  • A leaderboard counting arrivals and people still here, side by side
  • An optional line in a channel when somebody joins
  • /invites me for one person, /invites top for the server
  • Nothing to configure: switch it on and it counts
  • An arrival nobody could attribute is shown as unknown, never guessed

How to set it up

3 steps · about 3 minutes

  1. 1

    Switch the module on

Enable Invitations. The counters are read from that moment; arrivals before it have no answer.

  2. 2

    Give the bot Manage Server

It is what lets a bot read a server's invitations at all. Without it the module counts nothing and says why.

  3. 3

    Pick a channel, or none

A line when somebody joins is optional. The counting happens either way.

Frequently asked questions

Why is an arrival sometimes unattributed?

Two people joining in the same second through two links leave two counters moved and no way to tell which belongs to whom. A vanity URL moves no counter at all. Guessing there would put a stranger's name on somebody's arrival, in a leaderboard people care about.

Does the leaderboard punish people who leave?

It shows both figures: brought, and still here. A server sorts on whichever it means — and seeing them together is what stops an invitation contest becoming a link-spamming contest.

Does it work for arrivals before I switched it on?

No. The deduction needs counters held *before* somebody arrives, and there were none.
